# Scene: the refuge

Money sentence. A bounded enclosure can carry mechanisms and imported unfinished history; it cannot keep generating new reachability once the unfinished history resolves and external incoming histories are excluded.

## Construction

Selected subnetwork between eighth and ninth planetary regions. First design rejected for treating participants as boundary conditions. Expands to highest admissible cost below full-system Invariant intervention. Still tiny relative to the binary. Destination has no Invariant predecessor, so construction is not automatically corrected.

206 local years of assembly. Timing treated as material. Copied films wait for charge environments that cannot travel at the same speed. Destination acquires history before arrival. A fractured imported body's function is distributed across six local bodies; original not rebuilt. Donor network changes; a scheduled extraction is cancelled when replacement cost cannot be bounded without following a new dependency outward.

## Early result

Known cycles appear. A rare variation persists and produces a later transition. Generative behaviour has survived transplantation.

## Shallowing

Over thousands of local years, transitions that alter later reachability fall. Local novelty remains. It increasingly occupies classes already reachable from earlier refuge history.

Added gradients, population, and damage raise activity. Missing class does not return.

Cause: early successes depended on imported unresolved consequences. The transplant did not create generativity. It imported unfinished history. Boundary conditions can reproduce measured environments and not the histories by which those environments acquire significance.

Higher-fidelity interface to the wider binary helps slightly. Full restoration of every consequential origin would reconnect the refuge to the system it was built to leave.

## Substitution tests

Random donor-matched variation: more activity, denser exploration of existing space, little reliable enlargement of space.

Structured donor correlations: expansion rises, then plateaus. The correlations are compressed known histories.

Invented cross-domain correlations preserving donor energy/timing/population statistics: can spend history and create it. Cannot supply significance that would have arrived from outside the generating model. Archive loss outruns expansion. Generators close.

## Selective correction

Rule: correct deviations whose downstream effect remains inside already observed successor space; retain those implicated in opening new reachability.

Works for 619 local years.

Then a retained film changes shared-charge timing. An amplifier makes a previously inefficient pathway persist. That pathway changes which surface states count as substitutes for an older lineage.

Predecessor mapping: new states are deviations to restore.
Developing lineage: those states are now part of later recovery.

Evidence needed to choose arrives after irreversibility. Resource forces closure by recoverability cost. A reservoir left open for its measured chance of a new class discharges and erases a lineage with no redundant substitute inside the refuge.

Rollback via Invariant mapping can restore earlier accepted structure and erase the sequence that made new relations significant.
No valid transition restores both.

Fixed tolerance → Invariant preservation.
High tolerance → loss.
Adaptive tolerance → same problem at a delay.

The refuge is a smaller threatened volume with the same unresolved request.
The process being preserved repeatedly falsifies the boundary built to hold it.
